Center? WHAT CENTER? |
"The party that controls the center is the party that controls the American electorate.” -- DOES IT?
If that pronouncement is really true, then how might an expert define the political "center" and how does a party "control" it? James G. Gimpel, Professor of Government at the University of Maryland, discovered that half-a-century of survey research and critical analysis suggests something other than the conventional wisdom--and quite unexpected.

Why I Oppose Gay Marriage |
I don't always agree with Maggie Gallagher, but I do here. I support civil unions with FULL privileges for gay couples. But if you call it marriage, it will inevitably lead to teaching our children that men and women are interchangeable. Once it's officially marriage, it can't be kept out of the schools. Some may think that's a good thing. I don't. Vive la différence! |

Self-Immolating Republicans Part 2 |
According to David Brooks, a respected conservative columnist, the Republicans, by becoming the party of Joe Sixpack, are well on their way towards making themselves extinct. In 1976, in a close election, Gerald Ford won the entire West Coast along with northeastern states like New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine. In 1984, Reagan won every state but Minnesota.
But over the past few decades, the Republican Party has driven away people who live in cities, in highly educated regions and on the coasts. This expulsion has had many causes. But the big one is this: Republican political tacticians decided to mobilize their coalition with a form of social class warfare. Democrats kept nominating coastal pointy-heads like Michael Dukakis so Republicans attacked coastal pointy-heads....
And so, politically, the G.O.P. is squeezed at both ends. The party is losing the working class by sins of omission — because it has not developed policies to address economic anxiety. It has lost the educated class by sins of commission — by telling members of that class to go away.
Let's order another round for ol' Joe!

Self-Immolating Republicans |
I couldn't have said it better: House Republicans led the way and will get most of the blame. It has been interesting to watch them on their single-minded mission to destroy the Republican Party. People never learn. You'd think that from years of watching Democratic candidates implode, Republicans would have learned something. Instead, they're now outdoing the Democrats.

The Devil |

Al-Mansour’s more recent videotaped speeches focus on Muslim themes, and abound with anti-Semitic theories and anti-Israel vitriol. "Today, the Palestinians are being brutalized like savages," he told an audience in South Africa. "If you protest, you will go to jail and you may be killed. And they say they are the only democratic country in the Middle East....They are lying on God." He accused the Jews of "stealing the land the same way the Christians stole the land from the Indians in America." Are these the ties that bind, or are we blind? |

The Old Man Blunders |
What was he thinking? "Experience is being taken off the table considering you're putting someone within a heartbeat of the presidency with the thinnest foreign policy experience in history," [Democratic] spokesman Bill Burton said....
"Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? Given Sarah Palin's lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this Vice Presidential pick doesn't show judgment: it shows political panic," he said. There goes McCain's greatest selling point against Obama. So much for all those "3 o'clock in the morning" ads. Not to mention the new doubts that will surface about McCain's judgment.
And like it or not, McCain isn't getting any younger, so people really will try to imagine this 44-year-old, with less experience than Obama, as President.
Prepare yourself for President Superstar.

Georgia on His Mind |
Garry Kasparov who is a contributing editor to the Wall Street Journal has written a piece about the Russian incursion into Georgia in which he notes Last April, France opposed the American push to fast-track Georgia's NATO membership. This was one of many missed opportunities that collectively built up Mr. Putin's sense of impunity. In this way the G-7 nations aided and abetted the Kremlin's ambitions. He also suggests that "oligarchs, opportunists" and "the leaders of the Free World" value gas and oil over principles and therefore have blood on their hands.....
