It is far past time for an honest examination of Islam. Today we not only have organized Muslim groups calling for genocide against the Jews but even trying to carry it out, and their efforts are increasing. It's about time we faced the truth even if it makes us uncomfortable.

There are many anti-Jewish passages in the Qur'an. It is hardly relevant to say these verses refer to a certain historical period and should not be quoted out of context. Muslims throughout history have always used these verses to inspire and justify hatred of Jews in their own time - and in ours. The roots of Islam itself are anti-Jewish.

I don't have time to do this column justice. I could write a book about it. Ssupporting material is not hard to find. Here's just one. Alminbar.com is a very popular website that provides Muslim preachers with material for their Friday sermons.

Here is what it suggests that imams preach about Jews:

Why do we hate the Jews? We hate them for the sake of our Lord, we hate them for the sake of Allaah because they slandered Allaah and they killed and slandered His Prophets.

These Jews are the ones who think that they are everything and that everyone else is nothing. Among the things that they said about non-Jews, as stated in their Talmud, are the following:

· The sperm of a non-Jew is like the sperm of an animal.

· Every Jew has to do his utmost to prevent all other nations from having any possessions on earth, so that the Jews alone will have power and authority.

· If God had not created the Jews, there would be no blessing on earth.

· Those who are outside of the Jewish religion are filthy pigs.

They are the ones whose enmity towards our Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is expressed in their Talmud in the following terms: “Because the Christ was a liar and because Muhammad acknowledged him, and the one who acknowledges a liar is a liar like him, we must fight the second liar just as we fought the first liar.”

That last one is proof that these quotations from the Talmud are made up. The entire Talmud, Mishnah and Gemara, was completed well before the founding of Islam.

I expect the usual objection: this is not the "real" Islam. Total and utter nonsense. This is Islam as it is preached every week throughout the Muslim world. This is Islam as manifest in the center of Sunni Islam, Saudi Arabia, and in the center of Shiite Islam, Iran. One might as well say that since one doesn't like the Pope's positions on abortion and birth control, that his is not the "real" Catholicism. If this is not the "real" Islam, then the "real" version must be hidden with the Hidden Imam. And I would shudder to discover what that one must be like.

Alminbar is no fringe web site. I have seen it cited many times, and many Muslims rely on it for sermon material. What is truly scary is that words like those just quoted are heard by huge masses and believed with passion. It is the worst anti-Jewish rhetoric the world has known since Hitler.

Hezbollah just named its most powerful rocket after a battle in which Muhammad defeated the Jews. That was calculated: Hezbollah knows that will resonate throughout the Muslim world, where Muhammad is worshipped and his battles with the Jews are legendary.

This is the real Islam.
