2008 Presidential Candidates: An Initial Take
by Aaron F.
I'm curious to know what you all think about the presidential candidates for the 2008 race. Here's my initial take, knowing very little about each candidate and going purely off what was widely exposed on television or in headlines. I will only address the candidates that I consider to be serious contenders, i.e., Al Sharpton and Alan Keyes will not be discussed (I don't even know if they're running this time)
Democrats:
Hillary Clinton - I think everyone would agree that while she has a full head of steam among the Democrats and especially women, she is hated by a great number of Americans. I know she initially supported the Iraq war (so did I) and that's going to hurt her. I don't know if she can win. And if she does, I think her overconfident "I am woman hear me roar" manner of speaking could potentially lull liberals into a false sense of security while pissing off conservatives in a similar way that Bush pisses off liberals today. Very polarizing.
Barack Obama - Clearly this guy is an extremely charismatic fellow and an excellent speaker, which will go a long way towards making him electable. Without sounding like Biden, I mean to convey that he would not be electable if not for these qualities. Is the country ready for a black president? I know I am, if he's the right guy. Is he the right guy? I don't know. I think some of his opinions are not thoroughly thought through, for example his position on pulling troops out of Iraq. Or maybe he's just a bit too liberal for my tastes. Nevertheless, I think he could make a great president. And just the fact that he is running will expose racists and make our country a better place to live.
Republicans:
John McCain - I'm split on this guy. On the one hand, I think he has integrity for a) being a POW, b) criticizing members of his own party when he thinks they deserve it, and c) often stating opinions that have no alignment to either party, such as that Bush's plan to send in 25,000 more troops was flawed because there were not nearly enough troops in the plan (I happen to agree). On the other hand, he DOES often tow the party line and has expressed his support for Bush, which is a big turn-off. Still, this is the best candidate the Republicans have offered in a while.
Rudi Giuliani - Great in a crisis. Definitely cleaned up NYC, and man was it in need of a cleaning, but from what I understand, it was at the expense of the poor. I don't know much about his politics, but I trust him in the event of a disaster. I DON'T know if I trust him to prevent one, meaning I have no idea whether he can handle domestic politics OR foreign diplomatic relations.
Mitt Romney - The ultra-conservative. After Bush, I frankly don't think he is electable. At least, I sincerely hope he isn't. All we need is another president influenced by the religious right, pushing nationwide amendments that restrict individual freedoms, is decidedly anti-environment and anti-stem-cell-research. If he is elected, Canada will call to me once more.
The other candidates I either don't know enough to comment on, or think they don't stand a chance in hell.
So what do you think about these people? Have I left anyone out that stands a legitimate chance of being elected?
