Every state counts!
by Simon
I agree(with Carlos' comment in the recent election thread) that in all likelihood, Obama will be the nominee. Here's something that could call that into question though:
I was discussing this stuff with a friend last night, and the friend is in favor of counting Florida and Michigan. Ever since talk of including them has come up, I've been against it, saying in effect it would be unfair to those who campaigned under the presumption that those states were out. Besides, it would make many black voters feel disenfranchised.
My friend may have won me over to his side with the following simple argument: Is it better to keep the penalty in place and in so doing disenfranchise two swing states, or to retract the decision, make Obama feel somewhat cheated, and keep the possibility of winning the General Election possible? In case this resulted in a Clinton win, it would doubtless make many people, in particular black Obama supporters, feel disenfranchised. But really including Florida and Michigan would be removing an unfair advantage for Obama, since it silences two states. Wow, I might go find myself a protest. Look for me in Union Square, Carlos....
