Bad Words in Vana'diel
by Aaron F.
I'm getting tired of hearing nasty words as I travel from San d'Oria through the Valkurm Dunes. Everywhere I go, some "experienced" character is referring to someone else as a f-ckin' noob. This type of foul language is messing up the Vana'diel experience and I'm not going to take it anymore. Leave the young Warrior alone! So he may have pulled a Notorious Monster (NM) by accident and got your party killed. It's not the end of the world - you'll respawn! Or maybe the White Mage accidentatlly healed the Orc instead of you and that pissed you off. That's no reason to go brandishing the N-word.
For those of you who don't know, "noob" is a bastardization of the pseudo-word "newbie", which is short for "newcomer", which refers to someone who is relatively inexperienced in the ways of Final Fantasy XI. It is a word of hatred, and for that reason alone I hate it. But the thing that puts it up there near the same level in offensiveness as the N-word we are most familiar with in the real world is the fact that it sates a discrepency in the status and value of a person just because of the nature of the person. It doesn't have the pungent history that the real N-word has in the real world, but you get the picture. So the character isn't experienced enough to have a subjob, ride a chocobo, or fly on an airship. Big f-cking deal! The fact is, in order not to be a "noob", a person would have to put in HUNDREDS of hours in Vana'diel in a relatively short amount of time, and therefore sacrifice the things he or she has going on in the real world. So the more someone is not a "noob" in Vana'diel, the more the person needs to get a life in the real world. And when the person finally does get a life, I'm gonna find out where he lives, fly over there, and call him a noob.
But in Vana'diel, I will never use the word "noob". In fact, from now on when I form a party, the party members will be put on notice so that when some Dragoon/Summoner calls my Monk a noob, that high-level bastard will be immediately booted from my party and blocked from sending me personal messages. I'll also make sure that N-word uttering loser is blacklisted from joining parties with anyone on my stoner linkshell, and there are a lot of stoners in Vana'diel!
With any luck, the N-word will soon be a thing of the past and we can all get back to slaying Quadavs, Pugils, and Funguars in peace.
