How Do We Do It Right
by balboos
Clearly, all who've commented on my previous posts would seem to agree that things, politically, are not as they should be.
How did we reach such a state? How can so much of the electorate vote in the 'yellow dog' philosophy? Why don't they just pay attention to the news (and how did news decay to, primarly, human interest, instead of news?), and make decisions based upon actual events? Better yet, why don't they even pay attention to the news, beyond the sports page?
I put forth the predicate that America has dumbed down, and has been dumbed down, deliberately.
Starting as early as pre-school. The cartoons? The 'smart kid' is less attractive, and the athlete 'get's the girl'. Constant 'propagand' against math and science. This continues throughout the media cycle. Watch a local news station. See how pleased one, or more, of the grinning crew make an allusion to their inablity to handle anything technological - and be proud of it.
Being 'dumb' is a fashionable club to join! What a society!
And, for those few who bravely survive this gauntlet? No worry about employment: it's being shipped overseas!
But, back on subject: so long as people want the simplicity of the sound bite, feel more comfortable being led by the boyish grin of an air-head then the sage look of a thinker, this worry of words will be the state of American politics. The leader's job is to lead, not gring and make the constituancy feel "he's just like us". That's just not good enough to lead a nation - at least, not a free one. Call me sentimental.
So long as slogans are more more acceptable then facts. So long as facts are ignored because they're unpleasant. So long as everyone would just like to play dumb - politics will not improve.
It was said in 2000, and I'll say it again. There are over a quarter of a billion Americans - and look who's running for the office of leadership - surely we can do better!
