Free Will... No seriously.

by jayarrigo

OK, so we've done politics. And a lot of those politics have to do with religion but that's neither here nor there for right this second. But philosophy is something everybody can agree on, right?
I've been having scary thoughts about population controls for years and that coupled with the "Evil" thread made me think about possibilities. A lot of people attribute things to G-d (spelled as such for our more Orthodox friends). I think of Whoever-is-Up-There as more of an energy force than a bearded guy. Anyway, this leads me to think of omniscience and omnipotence and infinity.
Wow, it's not something I can even wrap my head around as it really is impossible. But I got to thinking if The Big Guy is in everything and exists as everything, then wouldn't it make sense to say that there are infinite possibilities as to how our universe turned out. Infinite times before this one and parallel to it and after this one?
So if there are infinite universes and possibilities, doesn't that mean that this existence is merely one of them? And therefore if G-d knows about all of the existences, doesn't he also know about all of the occurrences in them? And therefore knows everything that is going to happen? DOes this kill free will?
Now here's the ringer. Take the Big Guy out of the equation. He doesn't know, because there is no Him. But all of those existences are still taking place. Is free will still occurring? If there are an infinite number of possibilities and every atom has a different path in each one, doesn't it mean that along the way I have already (or will make) every choice available? And if every choice is existing out there do I have free will?

Discuss.
